Shopware Introduces New “Progressive Web App”

Schöppingen, 19/6/2020 – Shopware is taking a new approach to the frontend: At this year’s Shopware Community Day, which was held in a virtual environment due to the coronavirus crisis, shopware AG presented its new Progressive Web App (PWA). The PWA was developed by the shop software provider in collaboration with the open source platform Vue Storefront.

API-First Approach

The Shopware PWA is a JAMstack application and adds a versatile alternative to the frontend already included in the standard software. “It makes a lot of sense to additionally develop a high-performance PWA,” says Shopware CEO Stefan Hamann.

According to Hamann, the reason for this lies in a trend that has become increasingly apparent in recent years: “We are observing a paradigm shift that is causing more and more projects and customers to switch to JavaScript-based frontend applications. The great advantage of these is that they can be easily connected to other third-party services. The current version of Shopware 6 was developed according to the API-first approach and fully supports this from a technical perspective.”

New Opportunities

A progressive web app and the resulting deep smartphone integration allows retailers to connect more directly to their customers and to offer a shopping experience that follows the latest technological trends. As an easily adaptable turnkey project, the Shopware PWA is the ideal entry-level solution and is primarily aimed at agencies and retailers with prior technical knowledge.

Shopware-PWA-2

Proven Functionality

The Shopware PWA is a joint project between Vue Storefront and shopware AG with the goal of delivering an additional customisable, state-of-the-art frontend for Shopware 6. It takes the capabilities of Shopware 6 and puts them in the hands of frontend developers to create outstanding customer experiences based on modern frontend technologies such as Vue.js, Nuxt.js, Typescript and more. The PWA supports all the usual Shopware core functionalities; including experience worlds, product variants, the checkout and the plugin system.

Maintenance

The Shopware PWA is maintained and developed by a joint team of Shopware and Vue Storefront developers. The project roadmap is naturally closely related to the general Shopware roadmap. In keeping with Shopware’s open source philosophy, contributions and suggestions from the community are very much welcome, as always.
