A brief introduction: Gartner Magic Quadrant and its relevance for the ecommerce industry

If you're part of the digital world, you might already be familiar with the name Gartner. If not, we'd like to give you a brief introduction: Gartner, a firm based in Stamford, Connecticut, USA, delivers actionable, objective insight to executives and their teams. [1]

A Gartner Magic Quadrant is a culmination of research in a specific market, giving you a wide-angle view of the relative positions of the market’s competitors. By applying a graphical treatment and a uniform set of__ evaluation criteria__, a Magic Quadrant helps you quickly ascertain how well technology providers are executing their stated visions and how well they are performing against Gartner’s market view[2]

In the report, vendors are recognized based on their completeness of vision and their ability to execute. In addition, the report discusses the strengths and cautions of all vendors named. Hence, we feel it provides ecommerce executives with guidance and a helpful basis for strategic business decisions. For example, the report helps to evaluate ecommerce software providers and thus to choose the right digital commerce platform. Wondering how exactly this works? Read on! [2]

How does a Gartner Magic Quadrant work?

A Magic Quadrant provides a graphical competitive positioning of four types of technology providers, in markets where growth is high and provider differentiation is distinct:

  • Leaders
  • Visionaries
  • Niche Players
  • Challengers

This year, Shopware is recognized in the 2022 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Digital Commerce for the third time in a row. “Gartner defines digital commerce platforms as the core technology that enables merchants to purchase goods and services through an interactive and usually self-service experience.” For more information on how Gartner defines a digital commerce solution, click here. In addition to the positioning in the Magic Quadrant, Gartner describes the companies and their strengths and challenges as part of a detailed report. [2] [3]

How do I use the Gartner Magic Quadrant for evaluating a digital commerce platform?

“Use a Gartner Magic Quadrant as a first step to understanding the technology providers you might consider for a specific investment opportunity. Keep in mind that focusing on the leaders’ quadrant isn’t always the best course of action. There are good reasons to consider market challengers. And a niche player may support your needs better than a market leader. It all depends on how the provider aligns with your business goals.” [2]

As a graphical competitive positioning of four types of technology vendors, the 2022 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Commerce helps you specifically with the following:

  • Get quickly educated about a market’s competing technology providers and their ability to deliver on what end users require today and in the future.
  • Understand how digital commerce providers are competitively positioned and what strategies they are using to compete for end user business
  • Compare a technology provider’s strengths and challenges with your specific needs. [4]

In addition, we feel the Gartner Magic Quadrant offers vendors the opportunity to identify potential that they have not yet exhausted. Since this year's research by Gartner, several aspects have been identified and already put into action by Shopware. For example, to move forward with our__ internationalization__, we opened our very first US office in New York City, thereby strengthening our transatlantic representation. Especially in this historic year, we feel we're on the right track.
