Shopware 5.6 is not just the bridge to Shopware 6. It also offers valuable new features. Let’s answer the most important questions – like why the update is worth it and why you shouldn’t wait too long.
What’s the current situation?
Shopware 5.6 has been available since mid-August 2019. The latest update followed on 17 August, when version 5.6.8 was released. In the meantime, many shops are already reaping the benefits of the new opportunities.
Which new features offer the greatest added value?
The release contains a few new features that make your working with Shopware much easier.
- you can assign user roles easier with the new user administration
- take advantage of improved email management
- use the new SVG support to avoid fuzzy logos or graphics
- the handiest new features are probably the new content types and the possibility of custom sorting
Let’s explain these key features in detail.
Content types: comfortably creating exciting content
In the backend of Shopware version 5.6, you’ll now find the “Content types” tab under “Settings”. This new module lets you define content types, i.e. pages for a specific content category. This is especially worthwhile if you use certain content types over and over again, for example, recipes, FAQs, tutorials, job pages or branch pages.
The content types allow you to define the structure of a page right from the start – and use it over and over again. This way, the basic design of a particular content type always remains the same. This ensures consistency and makes creating such content more convenient.
At the same time, you have numerous options when defining the content type: choose between a large number of fields – whether HTML editor, simple text box, media or product selection. For example, you could create fields for a shopping list, matching products or authors for your recipes.
In addition to the fields, you can also define a name and an icon when configuring the content type, which you can then find under the “Contents” menu item. You can then use the new module over and over again if you want to create a recipe or other predefined content types.

Custom sorting – the choice is yours!
The category module now contains the new tab called “Custom sorting”. Here, you can move the contents of your categories and arrange them in the way that makes the most sense for you. The whole thing works quite simply by using drag & drop. You can also choose between displaying the contents as a table or as a grid. The latter shows you the pictures of the products, also allowing fast visual sorting.

Do my plugins work with 5.6?
Meanwhile, the majority of all plugin developers have adapted the plugins to the sixth major version update. A compatibility overview for each plugin can be found in the Shopware Community Store.
You can also check the compatibility via the auto updater in the backend or via the Shopware account under “Licences”.
What has changed in terms of technology?
In addition to new features, some system requirements have also changed with the 5.6 update:
- For the first time, PHP is recommended starting with version 7.3. Your web server is still running on an older version? You should change this immediately because it also has a huge impact on the loading speed.
- MySQL is supported starting with version 5.7. That won’t be a problem for most servers. Otherwise, you should update your MySQL version before the Shopware 5.6 update.
- You use the Elasticsearch database? With Shopware 5.6, you can take advantage of the new Elasticsearch 7.
